Garden Design 3 Term Courses
I – For beginners who want to design their own gardens and/or pursue an interest in garden design
II – For advanced students who wish to learn professional design and gardening techniques, and improve their plant knowledge
Classes, which are small and informal, are held at my home and garden in Slimbridge. We will also be working in either local gardens or students’ gardens, as the need arises
Design your own Garden
Year I
Term 1 – 2022/23

On the Beginners Course, students will learn how to measure up and draw gardens to scale, and how to design them.
They will also learn the Principles of Design and the basics of hard landscaping.
Term 2 – Border Planning – 2022

11th January – 5th April
In Border Planning, students learn how to plan beds and borders based on plant texture, shape and colour.
Term 3 – Graphics & Border Planning – 2022
Dates:
Tuesdays
26th April – 12th July
Simple graphics to illustrate the garden designs are combined with more border planning.
A practical is held at a local garden centre on combining plants, always a very popular exercise.

I Garden Design & Management
Years I and II
Term 1 of 2021/22 – Garden Design & Management
alternate Wednesdays
22nd September – 15th December
Building on the knowledge gained in the first year, students will design more gardens, produce planting plans, visuals and design reports. Garden management and practical work will also feature strongly on this course.
Term 2 – Garden Management – 2022

More garden design projects with the emphasis on practical work.
Term 3 – Garden Management & Garden Visits

This term includes some garden visits as well as continuing with garden management.

Garden Design & Management Year IV
Term 1 – 2021/22

21st September – 14th December
Held at May Cottage and students’ gardens, this course encompasses more advanced design projects and garden practicals with an emphasis on pruning. Students will learn how to maintain gardens to a professional standard.
